Decriminalizing Homosexuality

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Wednesday March 11th 2009, formally endorsed a U.N. statement calling for the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality, a measure that former President George W. Bush had refused to sign.

… According to negotiators, the Bush team had concerns that those sections could commit the federal government on matters that fall under state jurisdiction. In some states, landlords and private employers are allowed to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation; on the federal level, gays are not allowed to serve openly in the military…

But 70 U.N. members outlaw homosexuality — and in several, homosexual acts can be punished by execution. More than 50 nations, including members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, opposed the declaration.

Some Islamic countries said at the time that protecting sexual orientation could lead to “the social normalization and possibly the legalization of deplorable acts” such as pedophilia and incest. The declaration was also opposed by the Vatican. source

Criminalizing Cigarette smoking; CDC reports on homosexuality:

The Obama administration in addition to earlier on increasing the tax on cigarettes, in effect taxing each smoker an average of $200.00 per year, has initiated moves this week to place tobacco sales under FDA regulations. This would put strict rules and supervision on the advertising and sale of cigarettes and their content. His policies as described by his administration are to reduce the smoking culture in all Americans and majorly its youth. The question is- which is more environmentally harmful?

Greater health hazard

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), homosexuality is still the leading risk for HIV infection in the United States. HIV and AIDS is the fastest killer of black women and homosexuals.

UNITED STATES CENTER OF DISEASE CONTROL (CDC)

September 2008 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (1)

On the United States HIV infection rate:
The male-to-male sexual contact transmission category represented 72% of new infections among males, including 81% of new infections among Whites, 63% among Blacks, and 72% among Hispanics. Among MSM (males who sex males), Whites had 46% of new infections, and Blacks and Hispanics had 35% and 19%, respectively. Among MSM aged 13-29 years, Blacks had an estimated 5,220 (48%) infections, compared with 3,300 (31%) for Whites and 2,300 (21%) for Hispanics. MSM aged 13–29 years had 38% of new infections among all MSM and 25% of new infections among White MSM, 52% among Black MSM, and 43% among Hispanic MSM. Among White MSM, by age group, the largest number of new infections (5,600 [34%]) was among those aged 30-39 years.

From the above report and other information in the book- ‘Homosexuality Why Not‘, it is clear that homosexuality remains a very significant health hazard, probably more so than is smoking. Are the policies of the current Obama administration misdirected and misguided priorities?
