We are Not Part of NANS Award to Senator Buruji Kashamu – Comrade Shettima Umar, Borno Student Leader

Comrade Shettima Umar is the President of the National Union of Borno State Students, NUBOSS ATBU Chapter.

The Statement reads as follows:

We received a shocking report that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has awards Buruji Kashamu, Senator representing Ogun-East senatorial district, as the ‘Golden Man of the Year’.

We want to state categorically that as bonafide students of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that the award was presented to the awardee without the interest and consultations of my students who are also shareholders in NANS.

We would vividly recall on the history giving to us by our leaders in struggle that NANS only gave awards to deserving Nigerians, that in 1984 to 1985, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, who was the then NANS president bestowed the title of the ‘Senior Advocate of the Masses’ on the late activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) for his massive contributions to the Nigerian students and the society at large.

But we were shocked about the recent award giving to Senator Kashamu by NANS, because even the awardees can not point out one single development he has inputs on the Nigerian Students and the educational system at large.

It is still fresh on our record that many of our members (Borno State Students) were killed by Boko Haram in addition to the missing Chibok girls without a serious response by the NANS, at the same vain NANS has never visit Borno to sympathize to us.

The song of sorrow makes the heart bleed, We have suffered so much in recent years and still suffering.

In line to the above, We hereby by described the award as the decline of the quality of student representation in the country.

Signed:
Comrade Shettima Umar
