SaharaReporters confirmed from a family member that Senator Khalifa Zanna of Borno State died this morning. Senator Zanna had a prolonged battle with liver cancer, and had been receiving treatment in Germany and the United States.
Senator Zanna’s son told SaharaReporters that the late Senator passed this morning while on his way to the National Hospital in Abuja.
Zanna was a tireless advocate for the people of the North East as they faced the Boko Haram onslaught. Several times, he clashed with the government of President Goodluck Jonathan over what he called the President’s ineptitude in handling the Boko Haram sect. He complained that the government was not doing all it could to protect Nigerians.
In several interviews with SaharaTV, he accused the government of President Jonathan of not caring about the plight of the people of Borno.
Senator Zanna just won reelection during the March 28th general election under the All Progressive Congress. He is 60 years old.
