The Alaafin of Oyo has been accused of running a State within the nation, according to a report by PremiumTimes. The Eminence uses armed thugs to collect taxes and intimidate the populace, respidents reported.
“Living in the ancient town of Oyo, in Oyo State, South West Nigeria has become challenging and tough. In recent years, many residents of the once peaceful town have had to grapple with the repulsive activities of armed gangs, which allegedly enjoy the support of some of its most prominent leader.
Investigation by PREMIUM TIMES, spanning weeks, revealed that these gangs forcefully impose “taxes,” rob the residents and unleash mayhem on those who refuse to obey their “laws.” The situation has made business activities in the town difficult.” …As our findings revealed, thuggery and violence against people became “institutionalized” with the formation of Tobalase group around 2007. Nigeria’s leadership accused the Islamic movement leader, Shaikh Zakzaky of running a “State within the State,” using this to justify a brutal crackdown on his faithfuls with as many as 1000 resulting deaths and the kidnap of the leader, his wife and as many as 700 civilians by authorities for over a month.
Dr. Peregrino Brimah, a NewsRescue author had described that virtually every Chief in Nigeria runs a “State within the State” tolerated by the same government without the religious persecution witnessed last December in Zaria.
