A planned protest by members of Civil Liberty Organization (CLO) Anambra state chapter yesterday turned violent as thugs suspected to be members of Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign state of Biafra (MASSOB) attacked some human rights activists who were protesting the abduction of over 200 school girls from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno state about two months ago.
The protesters who marched along major streets in Onitsha were, however, waylaid by about twenty suspected MASSOB members at Post office, Old Market Road, Onitsha.
The attackers who allegedly wielded dangerous weapons pounced on several protesters and injured many of them. In the course of the fracas that ensued, the leader of the group and chairman, CLO Anambra state, Mr. Alloysius Attah was allegedly beaten to coma after being pushed into a water drainage with his suit torn by the attackers. While others were said to have received server beaten by the suspected MASSOB members.
Some of the protesters who received minor injuries thanked God for saving their lives in the attack. The CLO boss who is also Daily sun Onitsha correspondent told this reporter on phone that the aim of his attackers was to disrupt the protest.
He alleged that somebody elsewhere who was on the pay slip of the Federal Government sponsored the attack.
He emphasized that no amount of intimidation nor harassment would deter him and his organization from speaking out against the evils of the society.
When contacted, MASSOB Deputy Director of Information, Mr. Chris Mocha claimed responsibility of the attack, adding that MASSOB does not want such protest in the South-East as it was deliberately sponsored to smear the image of the presidency.
