A Former Military Governor Of Ogun State Appointed To ICPC By Osinbajo Embezzled Public Funds Under Abacha

Sam Ewang,  a third person appointed as a member of the board of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Offences Commission (ICPC) has been found unworthy of the membership of the anti-corruption body on the account of his past as a corrupt former military administrator under a late military dictator, Sanni Abacha.

Two other members Maimuna Aliyu and Sa’ad Alanmu have been dropped by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo after media reports revealed their deep involvement in corruption.

An investigative report by International Center for Investigative Reporting had revealed that the duo were being investigated by anti-corruption agencies for alleged corruption in the region of N1billion.

However, Saharareporters investigations shows that Mr. Sam Ewang a retired Group Captain from the Nigerian Airforce was involved in corrupt enrichment before he left office in 1999. Mr. Ewang was the military administrator of Ogun state between 1996-1998.

A report by Punch newspaper of March 28 2000 revealed that a probe panel set up by the new civilian regime in Ogun state accused Ewang of embezzlement of N28million which he claimed was used to purchase “protective equipment”. The equipment was no where to be found.

Another panel also revealed N20million was missing from the coffers of the state Councils of Arts and Culture.

Ewang reportedly made away with official vehicles and generator belonging to the governor’s office after his tenure.

The official corruption of Mr. Ewang was also included in a book “Challenging Issues And Accountability In Nigeria’s Public Administration” written by B. Oyeniran Adediji, Ph.D.
