Letter To Kashim Shettima As Rains Start In Borno

Governor Kashim Shettima

On Saturday 9th March, Maiduguri records its first rainfall of 2016 lasting for about 30 minutes. The rain which was witnessed in all parts of the Borno state capital town began at about 1.25 pm.

Some residents of Maiduguri bitterly started complaining on lack of drainage systems in some areas as the state government has constructed roads without drainages. The affected areas include Gwange 1,2,3, and
4 respectively, mairi Kuwait, Dikwa lowcost, state lowcost, Mashamari ward, some parts of bulunkutu, to mention but a few.

As the raining season is a season of blessing, the situation is getting critical for the residents of Maiduguri when ever the raining season starts as people will be suffering with flooding day and night until the rain
has stopped.

The situation is getting more critical for the internally displaced persons in IDP camps as they are lacking the basic facilities, services and installations needed to protect themselves during rainfall.

Saturday’s rainfall has shown the state government how the IDPs will continue to suffer if no aid is brought to them.

I am therefore calling on governor Kashim Shettima to come to the rescue of both the residents of the town and the internally displaced persons buy using the state funds to construct enough drainages and build shelters for the iIDPs than to be wasting the funds in taking along more than a 100 persons with him to an award night in first class flight which has no use to the government neither to the residents of Maiduguri nor to the IDPs. Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men.
