Nigeria: UNICEF Laments High Prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation in South East States

Enugu — The United Nations Childrens Fund, UNICEF Monday lamented that there is still high prevalence of female genital mutilation among the people of south east geo-political zone despite the high knowledge and awareness created in the area. It specifically identified Ebonyi and Imo states as topping the chart in the zone.

The Unicef Chief of A Field Office in Enugu, Mr. Charles Nzuki, made the disclosure while presenting their work plan results in a state mid-year review and planning meeting with implementing partners for south east in Enugu.

He said the practice of female genital mutilation in Abia state is still up to 44 percent prevalence, 30.8 percent in Anambra, 62.3 percent in Ebonyi, 45 percent in Enugu and 58.4 percent in Imo state.
