August 13th, 2012

The Plateau Police Command on Monday paraded a middle-aged man suspected to have gone to attack villagers in Kwakwi, a village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau.

Mr Dipo Ayeni, Plateau Commissioner of Police, who briefed newsmen in Jos on the development, said that the suspect was arrested around 2.00 a.m. on Monday at Kwakwi Village.

Ayeni said: “The youths in the area suspected the man’s intentions because he was carrying an AK 47 riffle.

“They also believed he may be with some other persons and immediately mobilised to prevented them from carrying out any evil act.

“The youths also alerted the patrol team and, together with them, were able to arrest the man with his AK 47.’’

The commissioner declined to reveal more details about the arrest, but hinted that investigation had commenced.

Meawhile, Mr Sam Audu, Chairman of Riyom Local Government, has commended the youths for the efforts that ensured the arrest of the suspect.

“It is good that efforts to safeguard the communities were beginning to yield fruits,” he said.

Audu promised that the local authorities and other stakeholders would continue to create awareness on the need for the people to be the first security agents of their communities.

He said that the intended havoc was averted because the vigilance groups were alert.

“What the man was doing in the area we do not know; why he was asking for the head of a particular family through the wife, we also do not know.

“But one thing is clear, the mission could not be an armed robbery case,” Audu said.

He said that the investigation by the police would give some clue as to the mission of the man to the village at such an “ungodly hour and with a riffle”. Link: http://dailytrust.com.ng/index.php/news/174218-police-arrest-suspected-attacker-in-riyom
