American democracy ‘in danger’ – Trump

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has rejected claims that his potential reelection to the White House poses an existential threat to the American way of life, telling supporters in the US state of New Hampshire on Saturday that Joe Biden’s ‘incompetence’ is the true threat to democracy.

Trump was speaking in Manchester ahead of Tuesday’s primary votes, which could solidify his place as the most likely GOP candidate to face presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in November.

However, after being accused earlier this month by Biden of being “willing to sacrifice democracy,” the former US president turned the tables on his political foe, claiming that Biden’s ineptitude for the job poses a clear and present threat to the US.

He is a threat to democracy,” Trump said, his comments delivered under a giant sign reading: ‘Biden attacks democracy.’ He added: “We have to get him out. You know why he is a threat to democracy? A couple of reasons, but you know the first reason? He’s grossly incompetent.”

It is an accusation that Trump has repeated on several occasions throughout his bid to return to the White House. In October, he blamed the Hamas attack on Israel on a “deadly combination” of Biden’s “incompetence, radicalism, and weakness.”

Trump, who is facing 91 charges in several criminal cases while he campaigns for the presidency, also accused Biden’s government of “weaponizing” the legal system against him. He claimed that Biden’s attempts are aided by his “protectors” in the “fake news” media.

The remarks appeared to connect to assertions made by Biden in Pennsylvania earlier this month, in which he stated that Trump wanted to destabilise democracy in order to win the election.

“Whether democracy is still America’s sacred cause is what the 2024 election is all about,” Biden stated January 5. “Donald Trump’s campaign is entirely about him, not America or you. Donald Trump’s campaign is fixated on the past, not the future.

Meanwhile, GOP-nomination candidate Nikki Haley, who polls show trails Trump by about ten percentage points in New Hampshire, openly questioned her Republican opponent’s mental fitness, following recent remarks in which Trump appeared to mistake her for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“When you’re dealing with the pressures of a presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do it,” Haley remarked on the morning of the election.
