Apple intends to fivefold iPhone production in India in response to increasing domestic and worldwide demand. Since 2017, the company has begun producing its flagship product in-house.

According to PTI news agency, citing an anonymous Indian government official, the tech giant plans to grow output in India to more than $40 billion in the next 4-5 years, up from roughly $7 billion in the previous fiscal year.

According to the insider, Apple aims to begin manufacturing airpods in the country next year, in addition to its iPhone range. At the same time, the insider stated that the corporation has no imminent intentions to manufacture tablets or laptops in-house.

The latest iteration of Apple’s iPhone was released globally last week. For the first time, the US company has started selling India-built handsets worldwide – a matter of pride for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, which has been pushing a ‘Make in India’ initiative. The project incentivizes foreign companies to localize production across sectors from defense to consumer goods. Two of the four models in the latest Apple handset series, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, are being manufactured in India.

Another India milestone today,” New Delhi’s Minister of State for Electronics and IT said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Tremendous feat for PM Narendra Modi ji’s visionary PLI [Production Linked Incentive] scheme. Apple ‘s latest #MakeInIndia iPhone 15 now available across the country on the first day, simultaneously with its global launch. Indians now accessing the latest products without waiting.”

According to the Economic Times, Apple has surpassed its Korean rival Samsung in terms of India-made smartphone exports for the first time. In the first quarter of the current fiscal year (June to April), Apple handsets accounted for 49% of India’s total 12 million smartphone shipments, while Samsung accounted for 45%.

Last week, Apple debuted the iPhone 15 in Mumbai and New Delhi, putting Indian demand to the test. According to Indian media, retail shops have totally sold out, and fresh internet orders will not arrive until at least mid-November in various nations. As India prepares for the highly renowned festivals of Navratri and Diwali, sales are projected to increase further.

On the day of the debut, long lineups were seen outside the company’s retail stores. The excitement over the new devices was so intense in New Delhi that customers brawled with store employees over a delay in the delivery of the phones, according to Indian media. The incident was captured on film and quickly went popular on social media sites. The suspects were later charged by Delhi police.
