by Abdulbaqi Aliyu Jari Katsina,
It was really surprising and unbelievable with the highest sense of humour, dignity for human person, wisdom, dogmatism, advocacy of international lawful order, and above all, making the right decision at the right time, that a “serving federal female minister” resigns from her ministerial post in violation of international law and choosing peace than righteousness.
Baroness Warsi, a minister in charge of human rights, United Nations and International Criminal Court (ICC), could not fold her hands to watch thousands of innocent lives slaughtered by the Jewish entity of Israel while its government technically support the massacre by keeping quite.
In many countries around the world including my country Nigeria, hardly can a minister speak up his/her mind sincerely, stands objectively on truth, justice and righteousness. This is because in most cases, the government is illegitimate, the ministers are in some cases thugs and political hooligans that repented, and unwilling to stand for justice because they don’t even know it, or at least, afraid to loose a shadow position they have been occupying, alas afraid to loose position to loot public funds.
Openness and honesty are undoubtedly among the greatest qualities of the brave and the just. While Sayeeda Warsi and her likes are busy promoting international justice and a just order, the Arab League, the United Nations and Saudi Arabia specifically are there wasting time on decision that are supposed to be spontaneous and instantaneous; that is defending the oppressed and using all means to achieve that.
Views and expressions are not just meant to be on what you perceive is right, but on what you know is right and in the right direction. “My view has been that our policy in relation to Middle East peace progress generally but more our approach and language during the current crisis in Gaza is morally indefensible, is not in Britain’s interest and will have a long time detrimental impact on our reputation and internationally and domestically”, Warsi posits.
National interest rises above personal sentiment and desires of people in the position of authority. In Nigeria’s democracy, it is part of the duty of serving ministers and other high and low government officials to defend the decision of the government be it right or wrong. That is what I will call, “Chicken De more crazy”.
For Sayeeda Warsi, it is truth and truth only. It is the reputation of the state that matters and social security. I timely used to wonder if the Presidency is an institution or a personality in Nigeria. If it is an institution, then who runs it? How and why? These are among the many questions that come to my mind.
Many a times, I know of statements made by the President as reported by the ‘mainstream medias’ that can be considered as reckless and un-presidential. Then the Ministers will be out there defending their Oga at the top. Those in position of authority must learn to take responsibility of actions done consciously and unconsciously.
When the Chibok girls were abducted, high ranking Nigerian officials started exchanging blames, and some even went ahead to blame the families of the girls.
But in the case of Sayeeda Warsi, she takes full account of what happened in the Middle East and said, “I believe our approach to the current conflict is neither consistent with our values, specifically our commitment to the rule of law and our long history of support for international justice.”
It is the believe of many “super powers” that power is right. Thus, that formed the basis for United States Government to attack Iraq despite the obvious, vivid, and manifest truth that Iraq has no weapons of mass destruction. Despite its blockade by the United Nations, that did not stop the US from its aggression. With all this forms of injustice, people have no means but to resort to belligerence and militancy.
This is exactly what Sayeeda Warsi foresee for future Britain if justice is not allowed to take its course. In her words, “However, early evidence from Home Office showed that the fall out of the current conflict and the potential for the crisis in Gaza and our response to it becoming for radicalisation could have consequence for us and for years to come”.
“I learnt that art of reconciling passion and idealism with pragmatism and realism, but I always said that long after life in politics, I must be able to live with myself for the decisions I took or the decisions I supported. By staying in government at this time, I do not feel I can be sure of that”.
In this our ‘Chicken de more crazy’, hardly can you find Nigerian officials taking responsibility of actions they took while serving in government. They are experts in shifting blames and bringing in third parties and accusing foreign powers of our woes.
Wari wrote, “It is therefore with regret that I am writing to ‘RESIGN'”. The last word, “#RESIGN” is the harshest, most difficult and most annoying word to Nigerian politicians. Among most Nigerian politicians, only few have ever resigned because of one reason or the other. Most preferred to be sacked or die on power rather than voluntary resignation.
Sayeeda Warsi closes her letter by assuring the Prime Minister of her personal support and cooperation. Most Nigerian officials after leaving office for one reason or the other (as they never ever want to leave office), leave the country half empty.
Sayeeda Warsi’s letter is full of wisdom and conscious thinking of the mind, expressed in written action for peace and self tranquility. This is no doubt a food for thought to Nigerian religious, traditional and political leaders.
