Biden is the real threat to democracy – Trump

Former US President Donald Trump has dismissed Democratic warnings about his prospective return to the White House, claiming that his replacement, Joe Biden, is a threat to the country’s democracy. Trump made these remarks ahead of a possible rematch at the polls next year.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump, who is still embroiled in a series of federal and state court fights over charges that he attempted to reverse the results of the 2020 election, has edged ahead of Biden in polling for a potential presidential run in 2024.

Although his campaign is likely to be conducted in the shadow of mounting legal issues, the presumptive GOP nominee has dismissed Democratic Party warnings that a Trump win represents a threat to the US as a “hoax” and “misinformation.”

“Can you believe it? This is their new line, you know,” Trump said on Saturday at an event hosted by the New York Young Republican Club. “Here we go again – ‘Russia, Russia, Russia,’ ‘Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine.’ One hoax after another.”

“But, no, I’m not a threat,” Trump added. I will defend democracy. Crooked Joe Biden is the menace.” The former president has alleged that the numerous legal charges against him are politically motivated, and he has pledged to pursue Biden if he is re-elected.

The former president’s new remarks come after he was chastised by his Democratic opponents for stating that if re-elected, he intends to temporarily become a dictator in order to build additional border fortifications and implement domestic oil production programmes.

“I said I want to be a dictator for a day,” Trump declared on Saturday in New York, referring to comments he made days before. “Do you want to know why I want to be a dictator?” Because I want to build a wall… and want to drill, drill, drill.”

Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor and candidate for the Republican nomination for president in 2024, said during the party’s fourth primary debate last week that Trump’s comments reveal him to be “an angry, bitter man who now wants to be back as president because he wants to exact retribution on anyone who has disagreed with him.”

Meanwhile, Biden recently issued a grim warning about the potential consequences of another Trump presidency. On Saturday, Biden stated at a fundraising gathering in Los Angeles, “The greatest threat Trump poses is to democracy.”

At an earlier campaign rally last month in San Francisco, Trump also stated that some of his speech is rooted in authoritarianism, specifically his promise to be his fans’ “retribution” and referring to his opponents as “vermin.”
