The Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States published a statement in response to allegations made in emails revealed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk after he acquired Twitter.
Musk has revealed documents as part of a series of exposes exposing the processes used by the FBI to request security checks of tweets and accounts by social media site administrators. Critics charged the FBI with unlawfully exploiting these requests for political purposes.
The FBI responded by dismissing the allegations.
“The conversation between the FBI and Twitter is nothing more than an example of our customary, longstanding, and ongoing federal government and private sector engagements, which involve numerous organizations across multiple sectors and industries,” the FBI told Fox News.
“The FBI, as indicated by this email, offers crucial information to the private sector in order to safeguard themselves and their consumers. Every day, the FBI’s men and women work to defend the American people “It was also added.
“It is sad that conspiracy theorists and others are spreading falsehoods to the American public in order to discredit the agency,” the statement said.
The statement is unlikely to appease critics such as Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, who has called on FBI Director Christopher Wray to testify before Congress regarding the allegations.
“The FBI will have a lot to say about the Twitter files. Every American who believes in the First Amendment should be outraged by these revelations “Kennedy posted on Twitter.
In a statement issued on December 5, the White House, on the other hand, minimized the revealed materials.
“So look, we see this as a curious coincidence, if you will, that he would so recklessly, that Twitter would so haphazardly disseminate this distraction that is full of old news,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at the time.
