Feb 7 Coup: Richard Akinola Sues INEC, IGP, NSA Military Chiefs Over Elections

Richard Akinola today filed a case at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Air Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff and the National Security Adviser (NSA) seeking an order of Mandamus compelling INEC to conduct the 2015 general elections as scheduled on March 28 and April 11 respectively.

In the suit, Number FHC/abj/cs/142/15, filed on his behalf by Festus Keyamo, he is also seeking an order to compel the IGP to provide men and materials for the security and protection of INEC staff and materials during the election.

Mr. Akinola, who is a  journalist, human rights and pro-democracy activist  also seeks an order of the court restraining the service chiefs and the NSA from further interfering with INEC’s conduct of the 2015 elections “whether by advice, suggestions,  oppositions or howsoever described”.

No date has been fixed for hearing.
