FEGOCOWOSA Lagos Branch Congratulates Akinwunmi Ambode

Old students of Federal Government College Warri, Delta State have congratulated the governor-elect of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and have lauded his election as evidence of the success of the unity school system in Nigeria.

A statement signed by the chairman of the Lagos Branch of the Federal Government College Old Students Association, Mr. Odion Omonfoman said the emergence of Akinwunmi Ambode, as the next governor of the state meant that the legacies and good works of the incumbent Governor, Babatunde Fashola (SAN) will be sustained and improved upon.

He said: “With the emergence of Akin Ambode as the next governor of Lagos State, citizens of Lagos State have voted for continuity in economic stability, prosperity, massive infrastructural development and greater growth. Ambode’s leadership qualities, nurtured as a student in Federal Government College Warri, in the then Bendel State, his strong public service achievements and very humble upbringing makes him the right man for the job of leading Africa’s 6th largest economy. We believe his main objective will be to ensure a safe, prosperous and economically viable state for everybody irrespective of their race or religion. As a product of the Unity School system, Akinwunmi Ambode is a detribalised leader and his election justifies the continuation of the unity school system which has thus far produced de-tribalised leaders and technocrats in all spheres of the Nigerian economy. It is imperative that the Federal Government strengthen and revamp the unity school system to ensure that these schools continue to produce de-tribalised students who may become future national leaders”.

Federal Government Colleges or Unity schools were established by the Gowon Administration at the beginning of the Nigerian Civil War to foster national unity, integration and nurture national leadership through education.  Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode is an alumnus of the Federal Government College Warri where he completed his Ordinary and Advanced Levels and had the distinction of achieving the second best result in all of West Africa in the Higher School Certificate Examinations in 1981. He was on the school’s Hockey and Cricket teams and was part of the then Bendel State Cricket team while still a student. Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode served as the Chairman of the Federal Government College Warri Old Students Association (FEGOCOWOSA) Lagos Branch and is also the immediate past national president of the Association.
