Kano state government has requested the government of Sudan in the training of Juma’at mosques Imams, to enable them face the challenge of providing religious and moral leadership to the people.
He said Kano needs the help of Islamic countries like Sudan, who do not condone religious extremism, to train the Imams and enlighten them on the correct understanding of Islam so that they will not fall prey to misguided teachings and resort to violent fanaticism.
Governor Ganduje made the assertion while receiving the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim Bushra Mohammed Ali in Kano, explaining that the already, the state government has started screening the religious leaders in preparation for a training programme.
He said the call became necessary in view of the expertise of Sudanese in Islamic education, recalling that the first batch of Islamic teachers that formally came to the state were Sudanese and that scholars from that country formed the nucleus of Islamic education at Bayero University, Kano.
Describing the relationship between Sudan and Nigeria, especially Kano state as very long and cordial, the governor noted that at the moment many students from Kano under government scholarship, are undergoing degree programmes medicine, pharmacy and other areas in several Sudanese universities.
The governor assured that more students would be sponsored for tertiary education in that country as soon as the economy of the state improves expressing satisfaction with the conduct and academic distinction displayed by the Kano students in Sudan.
In his remarks, Ambassador Ibrahim Bushra Mohammed Ali noted that Kano is the spirit of the relationship between his country and Nigeria, expressing his happiness that both countries are working to maintain that relationship for common good.
He noted that the Kano students in his country, especially females are well behaved and performing very well in their respective universities, urging the state government to sponsor more students as a way of strengthening the cordial relationship between Nigeria and Sudan.
