JTF killed 17 gunmen in Kano –Police

Police in Kano State have said the Joint Security Task Force killed 17 and arrested three suspected Boko Haram members who attacked security formations in the state on Tuesday.

Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, gave the figures in Kano on Wednesday

Idris said three assault rifles, 220 live ammunition and large quantity of drugs and syringes were recovered from the attackers.

He said the security agents had also defused 14 Improvised Explosive Devices planted by the suspects.

He said five cars, three motorcycles and N100,000 were recovered after the incident.

“On Tuesday in the evening some extremists launched sporadic attacks with bombs and assault rifles on Dala Police Division, Panshekara Division, Jakara Police Barracks and 52 Squadron, Challawa,” Idris said.

The gunmen, who were about 30 in number attacked the police formations with assault rifles and IEDs and the policemen repelled the attacks.

The commissioner said 10 of the gunmen were killed and three others arrested at Dala Division.

However, he said Corporal Saidu Umar was killed by the attackers, who also injured Sgt. Baba Williams.

At the Jakara Police Barracks, he said, the gunmen threw explosives at a disused police out-post, and shattered part of the structure, but policemen on guard killed two of them.

Idris said, “The extremists had attempted to attack the Goron Dutse Prison Yard, but the men on duty repelled the attack with no loss of life or property.”

He said another group attacked the 52 Squadron and Panshekara Police Division at about 8.30pm, but both attacks were repelled.

He said five gunmen were killed, and one at a private residence in Sabuwar Abuja, Panshekara where explosives went off.

Idris added that some explosives went off in a classroom at Sabuwar Doka Junior Secondary School in a suburb of Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano, at about 8pm, but that there was no loss of life or injury.

Spokesman for the JTF, Ikedichi Iweha, said in an email message, “At 18.10hrs on 26 June 2012, multiple Improvised Explosive Devices were detonated by members of the terrorist sect at Goron Dutse and Dala areas of Kano akin to the 20 January 2012 attacks in the state.”
