#KadunaProvocation: Zakzaky Reports FGN To UN Rights Commission For Massacre of His Family

President, Service Chiefs

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, led by prominent cleric, Ibraheem El- Zakzaky, has reported the Nigerian government to the United Nations Human Rights Commission, UNHRC, in Geneva, Switzerland, over the killing of its members.

Over 30 members of the group were shot dead in July by Nigerian soldiers. Three of those killed were Mr. El- Zakzaky’s sons. In a statement Friday by its leader, Ibrahim Usman, the Islamic Movement said the presentation by the leader before the world body was facilitated by the fact-finding team of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, IHRC.

It said the presentation to the Commission was made through skype because its leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky was denied visa to personally attend the special session of the UNHRC. About 35 members of the IMN, which is also known as Shiite Movement, were killed by soldiers last July during the group’s procession in Zaria, Kaduna State, to mark the annual International Quds Day.

Among those mowed down by the soldiers were Mr. Zakzaky’s three biological sons, Mahmud, Ahmad and Hamid as well as 32 other members of the Islamic Movement. Mahmud was a student of Almustapha University, Beirut, Ahmad a Chemical Engineering student of Shenyang University, China and Hamid an Aeronautical Engineering student of Xiang University, also in China.

A fourth son of the cleric, Ali, was shot in the leg. He survived, and is in hospital. The group said it was not satisfied with the way the matter was handled by the Nigerian authorities hence it decided to take it to the UNHRC.

After the shooting, President Goodluck Jonathan reportedly called Mr. El- Zakzaky to express his condolences and appeal for calm, but the cleric turned down the appeal, asking for justice.
