Many were feared dead as suspected Fulani herds men attacked three villages in Demsa and Numan Local Government areas of Adamawa State.
Tension escalated in Numan and neighbouring areas since the latest incident in which 55 Fulani women and children were killed in an attack on their community two weeks ago.
Fleeing residents have told Daily Trust that the attack started at about 5 o clock in the morning as gun men invaded Lawaru and Dong, shooting at any one at sight before marching toward Kiken in Numan.
A Bachama man interviewed by our reporter on telephone said the attackers had burnt down three villages and killed several persons.
“They burnt doown Lawuro and Dong and are currently in Kikan, the attack started in the morning but up to this moment, there is no security personnel in the villages.
The Police spokesman in Adamawa, SP Othman Abubakar confirmed the attack, saying casualties figure had not been ascertained.
He added that mobile police men and soldiers deployed to the area had restored nomalcy in the affected villages.
He denied reports that Numan-Gomber road had been blocked while travellers were turned away by police men.
Meanwhile, the Secretary to the Adamawa State Government, Umar Bindir and Commissioner of Information, Ahmad Sajoh who spoke at a press conference on Monday said the situation was under control as security were mobilised to halt the attacks.
“I can’t say the number of casualties for now as security are still there to chase out the attackers”, Sajoh stated.
