The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has refused to investigate the Zaria massacre according to details he gave in a recent media chat.
Over 1000 Muslims were massacred by the Nigerian army in the December 12-13th incident at three separate locations and their properties were demolished by the Army and Kaduna State government.
No Federal level judicial of inquiry has been set up to establish the details of the incident.
The Federal government has not contracted the Attorney General to officiate a probe into the incident.
The Federal government as revealed in the chat, has not and does not understand the role of the police in investigating the internal deadly break down of law and order involving members of the Islamic movement and the Nigerian army under their jurisdiction.
The Nigerian army and Kaduna government who are both implicated in the crisis are the only two arms of government overseeing internal inquiries into the incident in violation of logic and impartial justice requirements.
The massacre incident reminds Nigerians of the Zaki Biam and Odi massacres under former President Olusegun Obasanjo where the Nigerian army was commissioned to apply excessive and unjustified deadly force to kill thousands in communities to “teach them a lesson.”
Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari was seen taking sides in the incident and not showing empathy for the thousands of dead in the military multiple site extrajudicial action. The President went further to say that, “they tapped a soldier’s chest.” “I am a sitting duck, otherwise…” This indicating that had he been a military ruler, the massacre may have been worse.
This accusation “of tapping chest” which is even less than the Odi massacre where soldiers were actually killed by armed militants, and the military went out of hand, but evoking the same authoritarian responses involving the military being released to massacre civilians anywhere they are found.
