According to military sources, a Russian S-30 fighter plane crashed in the westernmost Kaliningrad Region on Saturday. Both pilots were killed in the crash.

“On August 12, an SU-30 jet crashed during a training flight in Kaliningrad Region,” the Western Military District said in a statement, according to Russian media.

Officials said that the aircraft was not carrying munitions at the time and that preliminary results indicate that it crashed due to a mechanical malfunction.

The Soviet Union developed the SU-30 in the 1980s, and it entered service in 1992.

It is a multirole fighter jet of Generation 4+ built primarily for air superiority.

In addition to the Russian Air Force, the aircraft is employed by China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Algeria, among others.
