Local officials have declared a state of emergency in an area of Russia’s Voronezh Region due to an outbreak of the deadly bacterial illness anthrax.

On Sunday, regional governor Aleksandr Gusev announced the measures in the Paninsky municipal area. According to a statement issued on Monday, they will remain in place until at least November 16.

Unauthorized visitors to the district will be restricted during this time. The transit, import, and slaughter of anthrax-unvaccinated animals has been prohibited. The shipment of meat and feed from the area has also been forbidden, as has shooting of wild animals, according to the statement.

The administration also stated that the outbreak had been contained by local and regional agencies. Every residence in the affected settlement has been inspected, and two mobile sanitary and veterinary stations have arrived, according to the statement. The officials did not reveal how many cases had been detected or the specifics of any diseases.

The Voronezh Region is located in southwest Russia and borders Ukraine. Its capital, Voronezh, is 465 kilometers from Moscow.

The previous anthrax outbreak in Russia was reported in March in the Republic of Chuvashia. The illness was quickly contained by the local authorities.

Anthrax is a deadly infectious disease caused by the Bacillus anthracis bacteria that can be found in rural regions and primarily affects cattle. Humans can get it through animals, usually diseased carcasses, but also from wool, hair, and hides.

The condition can manifest itself in a variety of ways, including the skin, lungs, and intestines. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, respiratory anthrax is the most dangerous and has a death rate of 50% to 80% even with therapy. The cutaneous type of the disease, on the other hand, is the most frequent and fatal.
