US Republican explains Biden impeachment move

On Thursday, US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene submitted three articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden, accusing him of breaking the country’s Constitution and constituting a “direct threat” to national security.

“His policies, directives, and statements concerning the southern border have violated our laws,” Greene, a Georgia Republican, claimed at a Capitol Hill press conference. She accused Biden of “blatant” failure to defend the constitution and faithfully execute US laws, and of working since his election to “systematically destroy this country.”

The nine-page resolution accuses Biden of neglect of duty and abuse of power in connection with the massive surge of migrants crossing the border from Mexico. Greene said that, in addition to allowing millions of people to seek refuge and enter the United States, Biden’s border policy allowed Mexican drug cartels to flood the country with fentanyl.

Furthermore, the congresswoman stated that the US administration had lost contact with an estimated 85,000 unaccompanied minors who had entered the nation illegally, escalating fears of child trafficking and slave labour.

“Joseph Robinette Biden is unfit to serve as President of the United States of America, and he must be impeached,” she claimed.

Greene has filed articles of impeachment against Biden for the third time. Within days of his inauguration, the Georgia Republican labelled Biden “unfit to hold the office” because of a “lengthy and disturbing” practise of “abuse of power” while serving as Barack Obama’s vice president, which included shady business activities in Ukraine.

Greene filed his second impeachment resolution in August 2021, accusing Biden of causing a national security catastrophe on the border and mishandling the US exit from Afghanistan.

Greene has also pushed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during “impeachment week,” accusing him of “allowing terrorists and human traffickers across our borders and refusing to uphold America’s immigration laws.” She has also accused Attorney General Merrick Garland of using the FBI as Biden’s personal police force, FBI Director Christopher Wray of waging “war on Americans who have been deemed enemies of the Biden regime,” and US Attorney Matthew Graves of “persecution” and violating the rights of Americans charged in the riot at the US Capitol on January 6.

Greene responded to critics who called her impeachment resolutions political by pointing out that Democrats sponsored two politically motivated impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump while he was president, both of which failed in the Senate. According to a recent Rasmussen poll, 71% of Republicans want Biden impeached, but only 14% believe the GOP-majority House will pursue it.
