Biafra Zionist Movement in Nigeria Plans To Declare State of Biafra – Nov 5 2012

July 11th, 2012

By Toluwani Eniola

The failed movement for the actualization of the Biafran State received a revival yesterday as a pro-Biafra group, Biafra Zionist Movement, BZM, vowed to restart their secession goal.

The group, according to media reports ,  vowed to commence the process to launch the struggle for a State of Biafra with the international community, saying that the formal declaration of the new Biafra Republic had been slated for November 5.

The  Biafran Zionist Movement  has been locking horns with the Federal Government, especially over the scuttle that ensued over Dim Ojukwu’s burial. The group in March,2012   vowed to defy the federal government’s ban , insists on hoisting Biafran Flag.

The President of the group was quoted in Vanguard newspaper as saying : “We will fly the Biafran flag in Enugu, Awka and Nnewi and we dare anybody to stop us.

Biafra, officially the Republic of Biafra, was a secessionist state in south-eastern Nigeria that existed from 30 May 1967 to 15 January 1970, taking its name from the Bight of Biafra (the Atlantic bay to its south).

The inhabitants were mostly the Igbo people who led the secession due to economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions among the various peoples of Nigeria. The creation of the new country was among the complex causes for the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Nigerian-Biafran War.

Land of the Rising Sun was chosen for Biafra’s national anthem, and the state was formally recognised by Gabon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Tanzania and Zambia. Other nations which did not give official recognition but which did provide support and assistance to Biafra included Israel, France, Portugal, Rhodesia, South Africa and the Vatican City.

Biafra also received aid from non-state actors, including Joint Church Aid, Holy Ghost Fathers of Ireland, Caritas International, MarkPress and U.S. Catholic Relief Services.

After two-and-a-half years of war, during which a million civilians had died in fighting and from famine, Biafran forces agreed to a ceasefire with the Nigerian Federal Military Government (FMG), and Biafra was reintegrated into Nigeria.

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) , a stronger voice  for the Biafran state  has ben advocating a separate country for the Igbo people of south-eastern Nigeria.

They accused the state of marginalising the Igbo people. MASSOB says it is a peaceful group and advertises a 25-stage plan to achieve its goal peacefully. There is two arms to the government, the Biafra Government in Exile and Biafra Shadow Government.

The Nigerian government accuses MASSOB of violence; MASSOB’s leader, Ralph Uwazuruike, was arrested in 2005 and detained on treason charges.

The Biafran Zionist Movement’s threat to declare the Biafra State is one of many calls to disintegrate the country, as many observers worried by the upsurge of violence perpetrated by Islamic sect Boko Haram believe a break up is the solution to Nigeria’s problem.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Azubuike Ihejirika, in   Jaji, Kaduna State, had in the past month, said that Nigerians should forget about any talk that the country would break up as the army would continue to fight to keep it together.

According to Nigeria Tribune, Ihejirika  said the army had been at the forefront of all efforts to keep the country together since independence, stressing that when people talk about Nigeria breaking up, they must have forgotten that they have an army that paid dearly to keep the country together.

According to the army chief, the army was ready to pay the supreme sacrifice to continue to keep the country as one united entity.

“So, we should forget about any talk of Nigeria breaking up. The army will not agree to that and I see it as a loose talk from those who don’t have the interest of this country at heart,” he said.
