While we had initially defended President Buhari for not yet openly releasing his assets on the premise of him waiting till the Code of Conduct Bureau finishes verifying them; now that that is done, Buhari has failed to release his comprehensive assets list.
Amidst much criticism, presidential spokesman Garba Shehu had promised that “As soon as the CCB is through with the process, the documents will be released to the Nigerian public and people can see for themselves.”
In September of last year the president released a draft list of his assets. But now that the CCB has finished reviewing the assets, President Buhari almost concluding a year in office is yet to release the declaration as promised and as late Yar’Adua did three months into office.
PremiumTimes commented on “a statement by the Code of Conduct Bureau this Wednesday which showed the President had reneged on his promise while some public office holders had yet to declare their assets, again another failure as Buhari had promised that his entire cabinet will declare their assets.
The CCB statement, “issued in response to a news report that verification of assets and liabilities declared by Messrs. Buhari, Osinbajo, President of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and other top government officials, including Speaker Yakubu Dogara, had not been completed, CCB said it had concluded the process of verifying the declarations of the mentioned officials.
“The bureau wishes to inform the general public that it has since concluded the verification of assets declared by those mentioned in the said publication,” CCB said in a statement by its Head, Press and Protocol, Mohammed Idris.”
