Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has declared that the African continent should lead the way in “saving the world” from homosexuality, as he prepares to sign into law an anti-LGBTQ bill passed by the country’s parliament last month.

Amnesty International has condemned the bill “The Ugandan law, which has been described as “appalling” and “vaguely worded,” imposes the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” and life imprisonment for the “recruitment, promotion, and funding” of same-sex “activities.”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has urged the East African country’s president not to sign it into law.

However, at the first Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family Values and Sovereignty in the Ugandan city of Entebbe on Sunday, Museveni insisted that homosexuality is a major threat to humanity.

“Africa should take the lead in saving the world from this degeneration and decadence, which is truly dangerous to humanity,” he said.

“How will the human race be propagated if people of opposite sex stop appreciating one another?” he asked as he interacted with lawmakers from 22 African countries and the United Kingdom who had gathered for the two-day conference.

The existence of so-called conversion therapy, according to Museveni, means that “homosexuality is reversible and curable” and that it “should not be preserved or propagated,” but rather “confined.””

Uganda’s president also assured the gathering that there will be no comprehensive sexuality education in the country, stating that children “need to grow as children.”

According to one LGBTQ activist who attended the conference anonymously via Zoom, African leaders were attempting to “reject American influence” and devise a “African strategy to combat homos£xuality.”
