According to the country’s Interior Ministry, a seventh-grade student opened fire inside Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School in Serbia’s capital Belgrade on Wednesday morning, killing eight pupils and a security guard.

The attack injured a teacher and six students.

A 14-year-old suspect was apprehended. According to police, the shooter used his father’s gun in the attack on the school.

According to the father of one of the young witnesses, when his son heard the shots, “he thought they were firecrackers and when he saw [the shooter], he ran to save his younger sister,” the father added.

According to a pupil, the perpetrator shot around 20 rounds and reloaded his pistol during the shooting.

According to classmates who spoke to the news source, the suspect was “quiet and withdrawn” and had good grades.

According to Vecernje novosti, the suspect decided to target the school after earning a poor grade in history class. Officials, however, have not commented on the attacker’s likely motivations.
