Angry residents and internally displaced persons booed the president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan when he paid a stealth visit to Maiduguri, capital of Borno state last week.
Our correspondents said that though the president made his visit very discrete and as we first broke, it was only made known to a few security people three hours before the scheduled flight, those who saw Jonathan in Maiduguri booed him before he left.
Also upon visiting camps of the internally displaced, the president was harshly rebuked with Boko Haram terror victims saying “Sai Buhari,” meaning, “only Buhari,” in reference to the opposition candidate in whom many Nigerians find hope.
When the president travels, all roads are emptied of vehicles and people for the entire duration, hence crowds could not gather to react to him along the way, our reporters gathered.
President Jonathan was widely criticized for not commenting on or condoning with victims of the Baga massacre of over 2500 Nigerians. His unannounced visit to Borno weeks to the February elections is said to be campaign related.
