The wife of the president of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari has violated the promise made by her husband during his campaigns, Punch published today.
The first lady operates form the same office her predecessor, Patience Jonathan used as “First Lady.” The only thing Aisha changed is the title apparently.
The office is occupied by staff, aides and official protocol.
President Buhari had promised not to have the office of First Lady. What that means is not the role or duties but the cost to the tax payer.
Aisha Buhari as wife of the president and a free person is allowed to engage in whatever activities she likes including with all international bodies, however based on the promise, as a government maintained office for such roles is found to be unconstitutional, she cannot usurp any government building or corner any government budget for such activities. They must be totally privately sponsored and housed.
If the Punch report is accurate, it will be hard for the Buhari’s to claim they did not abuse the trust of the Nigerian people and the integrity of the first family immediately comes into question.
President Buhari’s delay to declare his assets publicly as his government hits the 70th day has also been a heavy topic as an attorney recently sued the President and Vice on this.
It is popularly known that the downfall of President Jonathan was his loss of control of his wife.
