According to Chinese state media, a massive fire engulfed a skyscraper reportedly housing China Telecom in the city of Changsha on Friday, September 16, killing hundreds.
According to reports, the total number of fatalities is unknown at this time, but videos shared on social media show dozens of floors burning, emphasizing the magnitude of the disaster.
“Thick smoke is spewing from the site, and several dozen floors are burning ferociously,” said CCTV, China’s state broadcaster.
According to local reports, people were evacuated from the 200-meter-tall building. China Telecom is a massive state-owned enterprise with hundreds of thousands of employees. It is unknown how many people work at the Changsha tower, and state media reports that the number of fatalities is unknown.
The fire has been extinguished as of press time, but a side of the building appears to be completely burned out, with thick, black smoke billowing into the air.
Changsha is the capital of China’s Hunan province, which has a population of about 10 million people.
