Israeli Economy Minister Nir Barkat stated on Sunday that if Palestinian militants create a “northern front,” Israel will “eradicate” Hezbollah and target Iran.

“Iran’s plan is to attack Israel on all fronts.” If we discover that they intend to harm Israel, we will not only retaliate on those fronts, but we will go to the snake’s head, which is Iran,” Barkat told The Mail on Sunday. He warned that if Iran moves against Israel, “the ayatollahs in Iran will not sleep well at night.”

Barkat warned that Lebanon and the pro-Palestinian terrorist group Hezbollah “are going to pay a heavy price, similar to what Hamas is going to pay.”

Israel would go “after the heads of Iran” if necessary, the minister said. “Israel has a very clear message to our enemies. We are saying to them, look what’s happening in Gaza – you are going to get the same treatment if you attack us. We are going to wipe you off the face of the Earth.”

The comment comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian warned on Monday that Israel’s security situation might deteriorate soon. “If the war crimes against the Palestinians are not immediately stopped, other multiple fronts will open and this is inevitable,” he told reporters.

Later, the Iranian envoy stepped up his rhetoric, warning the US and Israel that if they do not cease mistreating Palestinians, “anything is possible at any moment, and the region will go out of control.” Further escalation, Amir-Abdollahian said, would have “far-reaching repercussions.”

Since the battle between Israeli forces and Hamas flared earlier this month, the IDF and Hezbollah have routinely exchanged fire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Hezbollah would face “unprecedented destruction” if it declared independence.

In the past, the Israeli army conducted many large-scale operations into Lebanon to combat extremists. The most recent incursion occurred in 2006.

On October 7, Hamas and other Palestinian organisations attacked several Israeli settlements, leading Israel to launch airstrikes in Gaza. According to both Israeli and Palestinian officials, approximately 1,400 Israelis and over 4,300 Palestinians have been murdered.
