According to a statement from the Crown Prosecution Service, a Nigerian senator, Ike Ekweremadu, was found guilty of plotting to harvest organs at the UK’s Old Bailey Court. The senator’s wife, Beatrice, and Dr. Obinna Obeta were also found guilty of trafficking a 21-year-old street trader to the UK to provide a kidney for the Ekweremadus’ daughter.

The victim was promised money and work in the UK but was not aware that he was expected to provide a kidney in return. Medical professionals became suspicious of the circumstances surrounding the donation and called it off, after which the victim was left to sleep on the streets for three days before approaching authorities.

Joanne Jakymec, Chief Crown Prosecutor, called it a “horrific plot” to exploit a vulnerable victim. “The convicted defendants showed utter disregard for the victim’s welfare, health and well-being and used their considerable influence to a high degree of control throughout, with the victim having limited understanding of what was really going on here,” Jakymec added.

Detective Inspector Esther Richardson from the Met’s Modern Slavery and Exploitation Command commended the victim’s bravery in speaking against the offenders, and this conviction is being hailed as a landmark one. The senator, his wife, and Dr. Obinna Obeta showed complete disregard for the victim’s welfare and health, using their considerable influence to control the victim throughout the ordeal.

This heinous plot highlights the seriousness of organ trafficking, particularly among vulnerable populations, and the need for law enforcement to remain vigilant in detecting and stopping such crimes. The conviction of these individuals sends a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated and that perpetrators will face justice.

CNN sources this information, and the conviction of these individuals has been widely reported in international news outlets. It is a stark reminder of the dangers of organ trafficking and the importance of preventing such heinous crimes from occurring. The victim in this case showed incredible bravery in coming forward and speaking out against his abusers, and his courage serves as an inspiration for others who may be facing similar situations.
