North Korea has slammed the United States and other Western powers for supplying main battle tanks to Ukrainian forces, claiming that Washington’s “proxy war” against Russia is a grave threat to global peace.

Senior Workers’ Party official Kim Yo-jong – North Korean leader Kim Jong-sister un’s – claimed on Friday that the US involvement in Ukraine has “exposed the entire continent of Europe to the grave danger of war,” according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Washington and its allies are “destroying world peace and regional security by handing over an astronomical amount of military equipment to Ukraine while completely ignoring Russia’s safety concerns,” she said, adding that the decision to supply tanks poses a “significant threat and challenge to Russia’s strategic security.”

After repeatedly declining Kiev’s requests for heavy armor, US officials agreed earlier this week to send 31 M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine. Though the weapons aren’t expected to arrive on the battlefield until August at the earliest, several allies have pledged to send their own Leopard 2 tanks in the coming weeks and months, including Germany and Poland.

Berlin was initially hesitant to allow shipments of the German-made vehicle, but eventually agreed under pressure from other NATO members, allowing allies to export Leopards to Ukraine.

Kim then expressed “serious concern” about the possibility of escalation in Ukraine, accusing the US of “further expanding the proxy war to destroy Russia.” She did, however, say that “regardless of how desperate the allied imperialist forces are,” all Western weapons supplied to Kiev would “burn up and become a pile of iron.”

Similar warnings have been issued by Moscow regarding foreign intervention in Ukraine, arguing that nonstop arms shipments only serve to prolong the conflict and risk direct confrontation with the NATO alliance. Officials insist that no amount of military assistance will deter Russia from achieving its goals, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declaring that Western tanks will “burn” on the Ukrainian battlefield.
