Tehran is still attempting to assassinate former US President Donald Trump, his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and other officials responsible for Qassem Soleimani’s assassination in 2020, according to Amirali Hajizadeh, the head of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) aerospace force.
The top general made the remarks while unveiling a new cruise missile with a 1,650-kilometer range (1,025 miles).
“We hope to assassinate Trump, Pompeo, [retired US general Kenneth] McKenzie, and the military commanders who issued the order,” Hajizadeh said.
Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s top general, was killed in a US drone strike on January 3, 2020, while visiting Iraq’s capital Baghdad. Then-President Trump boasted about personally commissioning the attack, claiming it was in retaliation for alleged Iranian attacks on US personnel throughout the region.
Tehran’s top officials have repeatedly promised to avenge Soleimani’s death, threatening to kill Trump and others involved in the strike. At the same time, Iran has taken a more legal approach to punishing the perpetrators, repeatedly requesting that Interpol assist in apprehending Trump and nearly 50 other US officials it believes are involved in the strike.
