Telecom giant MTN has reportedly agreed to pay a massive figure of $1.7 billion dollars as a settlement in a $3.9 billion total fine for non compliance.
This is one of the largest fine-settlements in business fines in history.
The MTN Group limited is paying N330 billion.
Bloomberg says, “MTN was hit with the penalty for being slow to disconnect customers as Nigeria sought to cut off service to some users while fighting crime in a country with poor identity records. The insurgent group Boko Haram’s campaign to establish its version of Islamic law in Nigeria has left thousands of people dead since 2009.”
