Nigeria’s military spokesman, Gen. Olu Kolade has shockingly denied that 2000 Nigerians were killed in the recent attacks in Baga, North East Nigeria; claiming only 150 people were killed.
Amnesty international had verified that as many as 2000 innocent civilians went killed in the attacks that began on January the third this year.
However, NewsRescue can independently confirm that more than 2000 Nigerians where killed in the events of the deadly week.
Estimates of the dead were obtained from fleeing residents who arrived in Maiduguri, the state’s capital. Victims gave numbers of their family members and friends who they saw die. The death count is expected to rise as many more who were not seen die and I yet unaccounted for may have been killed. In the villages attacked populations of over 30,000 Nigerians were affected. About 7000 refugees first arrived Maiduguri. Displaced persons were said to have fled to Chad however news rescue cannot verify this because it is quite impossible for the people of Baga to have crossed the Lake Chad.
Nigeria’s government’s denial of the true figures of the casualty is sad but not unexpected. It is impossible to understand how Nigeria came up with its figures since the Nigerian military has been unable to gain access to Baga and its environs.
It is recollected that the Nigerian government likewise denied the Chibok girls abduction and later lied that they had rescued all but 7 of the girls before the truth was exposed.
