A teacher in Georgia is being looked into after claims that he had sex with a 14-year-old former pupil. The middle school teacher had won this year’s “teacher of the year” award prior to the allegations of child sex abuse.
Charles B. Jackson, a 54-year-old teacher at Macon, Georgia’s Ballard-Hudson Middle School, was detained by authorities on Thursday. According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson was accused with two counts of statutory rape and one count of severe child molestation.
Jackson is being held without bond at the Bibb County jail after being brought there. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, a magistrate judge ordered him to avoid all contact with the alleged victim and the victim’s family.
Jackson was the subject of an investigation by deputies from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Crimes Against Children section after there were allegations that the middle school teacher was having a “inappropriate connection” with a former pupil. Jackson allegedly had intercourse with an ex-student who was 14 years old.
At Ballard-Hudson Middle School, Jackson taught and coached baseball. There, he was also honored as “teacher of the year.”
The Bibb County school system declared Jackson’s dismissal on Thursday. Parents were advised by school administrators that the school is participating with the inquiry and that anyone with concerns about their own children should contact the school.
The inquiry is still being conducted. Anyone with information on the potential sex crime case is asked to call the Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68-CRIME or the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500, according to law enforcement.
