Several days after the the Nigerian army reported successfully killing the latest “Shekau” of Boko Haram; the US based media, CNN has at last carried the story.

However, the US media wrote:

The Nigerian military has touted Shekau’s death several times, only to retract its claim after he appeared alive and well in propaganda videos.

We do confirm on behalf of the Nigerian military that the military never retracted its claim of killing Shekau several times in the past.

What is clear to all and has been clear to the military is that “Shekau” is simply a title like “Emir” and any crazy militant who resembles the first Shekau, or has to use a band to cover bumps on his head to cover his differences, assumes the role.

The Nigerian military killed the first Shekau in July of 2013 and reported this and remained consistent in its report, never retracting the story as CNN alleged.

CNN went ahead to rightly publish the statement by Nigeria’s military promising to kill every other terrorist who decides to bear the Shekau title.

“In the course of those encounters, one Mohammed Bashir who has been acting or posing on videos as the deceased Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric character known as leader of the group, died,” it said.

“Since the name Shekau has become a brand name for the terrorists’ leader, the Nigerian military remains resolute to serve justice to anyone who assumes that designation or title.”

It is baffling but not surprising why CNN and AFP keep trying to ignore the obvious doubles Boko Haram uses to keep Shekau immortal.
