On day two of being detained illegally by the EFCC, Online Publishers Association of Nigeria(OPAN) has condemned the arrest of Abubakar Sidiq Usman.
The body described the arrest of the popular blogger as an attempt to stifle press freedom in Nigeria and asked EFCC to release Abubakar Sidiq Usman immediately without conditions or bring him before a competent court.
Abubakar Sidiq Usman was arrested by the EFCC allegedly for “Cyber stalking,” however Nigeria has no such listed crime. Also the EFCC is for economic and financial crimes and has no such jurisdiction and is not a court to issue such arrest warrant.
OPAN pointed out that EFCC’s action was an abuse of its powers and demanded the anticorruption agency to cease and desist from acting as judge, jury and executioner.
