The COVID-19 pandemic was most likely caused by a Chinese lab leak, according to the US Department of Energy.
According to a classified intelligence report recently provided to the White House and key members of Congress, the COVID pandemic is most likely the result of a leak from a Chinese laboratory.
“The Energy Department now joins the Federal Bureau of Investigation in saying the virus likely spread via a mishap at a Chinese laboratory,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
“The Energy Department’s conclusion is the result of new intelligence,” according to the WSJ, “and is significant because the agency has considerable scientific expertise and oversees a network of U.S. national laboratories, some of which conduct advanced biological research.”
According to the report, which is reportedly less than five pages long, the Department of Energy made the decision with “low confidence.” The FBI reportedly concluded in 2021 that COVID became public through a lab leak. The FBI expressed “moderate confidence” in its decision.
According to US agencies, COVID-19 escaped from a lab and was not part of a Chinese biological weapons program.
Meanwhile, four other US government agencies believe the coronavirus pandemic was caused by natural transmission. Two other agencies, including the CIA, have yet to determine the source of the deadly pandemic.
“Kudos to those who are willing to set aside their preconceptions and objectively re-examine what we know and don’t know about COVID origins,” said David Relman, a microbiologist at Stanford University. My plea is that we do not accept an incomplete answer or give up for political reasons.”
