According to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, less than half of Democrats want President Joe Biden on the ballot in 2024.
Only 37% of Democrats want the president to run for reelection in 2024. That figure is much lower among Democrats 18-44, at 23%, while it is 49% among Democrats 45 and up.
According to a nationwide poll of adults, only 22% believe Biden will run for reelection.
Biden, the world’s oldest president, would be 86 by the end of a second term.
“I honestly believe he would be too old,” 37-year-old Democrat Sarah Overman told the Associated Press. “We could use a younger person in the office.”
“I believe he’s not the one making the decisions,” Republican John Rodriguez, 76, told the outlet. “He’s like a puppet who is told where to go and what to say.”
Vikram Joglekar, 46, supported Biden in 2020 but described the president’s time in office as “meh,” according to the AP. “It is not up to me to decide whether or not someone should run,” Joglekar said. “I’m not sure who will be on the ballot, but I’m hoping for someone better from his party.”
“He appears to be in pretty good condition in my opinion, and this is coming from a 76-year-old woman,” Democrat Linda Lockwood told the Associated Press. “You might be a little more cautious going down the steps as you get older, but the important thing is that your brain is still working.”
Former President Donald Trump announced last year that he will run for re-election; he will almost certainly face GOP primary challengers as he seeks the Republican presidential nomination. Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is said to be planning a White House run this month.
