President Bola Tinubu’s administration has stated that nearly all of Nigeria’s ambassadors are returning home as part of a revamp of Abuja’s diplomatic posts. They stated that the two UN representatives would be spared for the time being.
According to a press release issued on Saturday by Presidential Adviser Ajuri Ngelale, “President Bola Tinubu has directed the recall of all career and non-career ambassadors from their duty posts worldwide” with immediate effect.
The decision was made after a “careful study of the current state of affairs at Nigerian Consulate Offices and Embassies worldwide,” according to the letter.
The measure’s declared goal is to ensure that Abuja’s diplomatic missions provide “world-class efficiency and quality.”
Nigeria’s permanent representatives at the international body stationed in New York and Geneva are excluded from the recall, according to Ngelale.
According to Reuters, the African country maintains 109 diplomatic missions around the world.
Tinubu, who took office in late May of this year, has since replaced Nigeria’s defense chief, as well as the commanders of the army, navy, and air force.
The president also dissolved the boards of directors of federal government organizations, agencies, and state-owned enterprises in June.
Among the reforms implemented by the president thus far is the elimination of fuel subsidies in order to shift revenues to the agricultural sector.
However, the measure has resulted in a significant increase in the cost of food and transportation in Nigeria.
