The Cable reports that Daurawa said the criteria for marrying another wife as contained in the Quran should be strictly followed.
Sanusi was reported to have said that: “Those of us in the North have all seen the economic consequences of men who are not capable of maintaining one wife, marrying four. They end up producing 20 children, not educating them, leaving them on the streets, and they end up as thugs and terrorists.”
“It is perhaps a tribute to Mallam Isa that today, as I speak, in the palace in Kano a sub-committee of scholars, which I set up and has been working for about a year, is finalizing the final sections of a family law we intend to introduce in Kano which will address some of the issues that Mallam Isa was concerned about.”
Daurawa however advised the monarch to focus on enlightening the people on the intricacies of polygamy.
According to The Cable, Daurawa said in an interview with the BBC Hausa service on Friday, that the subject matter should be put in the curriculum of secondary school for young ones to know what is best for them.
“Allah position on marriage is sacrosanct as stated in the Holy Quran and any infringement is nullity,” Daurawa said.
“What needs to be done is not enactment of a law that would bar the poor from marrying more than one wife but rather enlightenment on the intricacies of polygamy.
“There about 13 criteria to be followed before one qualifies to marry a second wife and this include been just and caring to the wife as been enshrined in the Holy Quran should be strictly followed.”
However, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended the Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi over his plan to propose a bill that will ban poor men from marrying many wives.
