Gunmen suspected to be ex-militants have attacked a pipeline carrying crude belonging to Italian Oil giant Eni, also known as Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC), located at Brass Local Government Area (LGA) of Bayelsa State.
The pipeline, which was bombed by some unknown suspects on Thursday night, has spilled crude oil into the environment, according to eyewitness accounts.
The Baylesa State House of Assembly representative from Brass Consituency 1, Israel Sunny-Goli, has condemned the unlawful act.
Mr. Sunny-Goli, said during an interview that, according to preliminary investigations, the bombing of the pipeline was intended to damage the economic interests of Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
According to him, the latest explosion follows a surge of similar acts of sabotage which he worries is capable of forcing oil companies out of the area thus damaging the economy and livelihoods of local residents. He called on security agencies to increase security and prevent similar attacks.
Mr. Sunny-Goli said that, “Bayelsans, especially those that have oil facilities around them, should also be vigilant and report any suspicious movement to security agencies to prevent further attacks.”
