King Charles has been diagnosed with a type of cancer, Buckingham Palace said on Monday.
According to a Palace statement, the health condition was identified during the king’s recent hospitalisation for an enlarged prostate. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the statement said, emphasising that it wasn’t prostate cancer.
No other information on the specific type of cancer, its stage, or prognosis has been supplied.
“His Majesty has today begun a programme of regular treatments, and doctors have urged him to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this time, His Majesty will continue to conduct state business and official paperwork as usual,” the statement read.
The monarch remains “wholly positive about his treatment” and hopes to return to full public duty as soon as possible, according to the statement. The monarch has decided to make his diagnosis public in order to minimise “speculation,” as well as to increase cancer awareness “for all those around the world” impacted by the disease, the palace said.
Charles took the British throne on September 8, 2022, at the age of 73, succeeding his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who had reigned for more than 70 years.
