The United States has approved billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine as it has attempted to repel a Russian invasion over the last year, but former Vice President Mike Pence, who has indicated his interest in running for President, has warned that if America wavers in its commitment to support Ukrainians in defending their freedom, U.S. troops may be forced to fight to defend America’s freedom.

Pence stated that the quickest “path to peace” is to assist Ukraine in winning the war. He believes that “if Russia is not stopped in Ukraine,” NATO allies will be threatened, and that at that point, the US “will have no choice” but to send its own troops.

Pence has advocated for sanctions against Russia as well as military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Pence is one of the Republican figures who may decide to enter the 2024 presidential race, which would entail challenging former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary — Pence served alongside Trump during Trump’s presidency.

“We’re listening, reflecting, and talking to firms,” Pence told NBC News, adding that “our family expects to have a very clear sense of our calling by the spring.” Pence has stated that he is “confident” that there will be “better alternatives” to Trump.

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who served in that capacity for a time during Trump’s presidency, has already declared her candidacy for president. Vivek Ramaswamy has also declared his candidacy for president.
