Deadly shooting triggers university lockdown

Michigan State University has been placed on lockdown following multiple shots fired on campus. The gunman, who killed three people and injured at least five others, died from an apparent self-inflicted wound, according to police.

On Monday night, campus police reported shots fired at MSU’s Berkey Hall and IM East building, noting that law enforcement is “active on the scene.” Authorities initially stated that there were “multiple injuries” and that only one suspect appeared to be involved.

Three people were killed in the shooting, according to police, and five others were taken to Sparrow Hospital, some with life-threatening injuries. Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of campus police, described the suspect as a “black male, shorter in stature, wearing red shoes and a jean jacket.”

“Community members on and off campus should remain in place,” police said. Around 10:20 p.m., with law enforcement still on the scene, the school announced that all campus activities would be canceled for the next 48 hours.

During the incident, campus law enforcement issued a separate notice advising students and staff to “run,” “hide,” or “fight” depending on their circumstances. “Run means to safely evacuate away from danger, Hide means to secure in place, and Fight means to protect yourself if you have no other option,” it said.

After being briefed on the incident, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer tweeted, “Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight.”
