The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over its renewed efforts in pursuing ongoing fuel subsidy corruption cases in the country.

The group’s action was sequel to the accelerated pace some of the cases have been receiving in the past two months.

ANEEJ’s Policy Officer, Innocent Edemhanria, noted that following his group’s monitoring of the process, they have observed that some of the cases are now receiving accelerated hearing, adding that “we appreciate the efforts of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police and the judiciary in this regard.”

He however expressed his group’s concern on the pace of arraignment and prosecution of suspects, saying that “ANEEJ is afraid that delay in the prosecutions may pave way for suspects who have plenty of money and are also powerfully connected, to escape justice.”

He said: “Nigerians are anxiously waiting; and urgently too, to see the results of the prosecutions to possibly serve as deterrence to corrupt citizens and companies who may have such sinister motive using their vantage positions in public office and the society.

“We wish to encourage the EFCC and other stakeholders involved in the prosecution of these cases to continue in this regard so as to frustrate the plot by corrupt oil marketers who have tried so hard to truncate the entire process,” Edemhanria said.
