EU ambassador assaulted in Sudan

According to the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, the EU ambassador to Sudan was attacked on Monday amid ongoing battles between the country’s military and a prominent paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The envoy was “assaulted in his own residency,” according to Borrell’s tweet. He did not provide any specifics about the incident or who was responsible for it. It is unknown whether the EU ambassador was injured in the attack.

Borrell termed the incident a “gross violation of the Vienna Convention,” saying that under international law, the host government is responsible for the security of diplomatic missions.

Around two hours earlier, the EU’s top diplomat stated on Twitter that the EU was “working to persuade each side to consider [a] humanitarian pause and to encourage dialogue,” adding that civilians “urgently need a ceasefire.”

Al Arabiya claimed earlier on Monday that a US Embassy car was also targeted in Sudan. According to the embassy’s sources, RSF fighters opened fire on the armoured vehicle.

According to the sources, the car was purposefully targeted, and around 100 bullets were fired at it. According to Al Arabiya, no one was hurt in the event.

Clashes erupted in Sudan on Saturday as General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) clashed with the RSF, led by his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. Burhan has de facto overseen the country’s interim governments since Omar Al-Bashir, the country’s longstanding dictator, was deposed in a coup in 2019.
